Food Program
At Kidworks we aim to help children develop healthy eating and physical activity habits for life. During the early childhood year’s children will grow physically, mentally, and socially in ways that affect behavior in all areas, including eating. Every child develops eating habits at a different pace. Help your preschooler eat well, be active, and grow up healthy. Kidworks follows the NH State guidelines for providing our breakfasts, morning and afternoon snacks. When packing your child’s snack and/or lunch from home, we encourage you to follow the same guidelines for the benefit of your child.
Because we will be consistently providing children with whole grain and dairy choices we ask that lunches contain at least one serving of protein and one serving of fruit or vegetable to ensure the food children are consuming while at school meet state guide lines . A model lunch box might contain:
•Turkey rollups, cheese, dried cranberry, and whole wheat crackers in an insulated bag with an ice pack.
•Egg salad, pita wrap, and honey dew melon
•cottage cheese, whole grain pretzels, and pineapple
•soup, carrots and hummus
We are asking the lunches come packed daily in an appropriate lunch container. Please keep food safety in mind, for example an insulted lunch pack for food that needs to be kept cool or a thermos for foods to be kept warm. It is not possible for our staff to reheat or refrigerate lunches.
The center cannot serve any hard candy, sodas or other high sugar/sodium food at meals. If your child’s lunch box contains these items, the child will be directed to make healthier choices. The families will be advised of the food requirements, and staff will continue to monitor children’s food choices.
Children under the age of three have some additional safety guidelines for parents to follow when bringing food for staff to serve to children at school.
New Hampshire Child Care Licensing states that children younger than three years of age may not have spoonful’s of sun butter, whole or rounds hot dogs, whole grapes, hard, candy, raw carrot rounds, peas, celery, chips, pretzels, marshmallows, nuts, seeds, popcorn or other foods that may pose a choking hazard.
The center will provide fortified iron rich baby cereal, Gerber Rice Cereal and Gerber solid fruits and vegetables. Families will be responsible for providing breast milk or iron fortified formula for their child.
As a reminder we will continue not to serve tree nuts or peanuts or allow them to enter the center. Please be aware of ingredients on prepackaged foods.
Kidworks will provide substitutions for children with allergies providing that have medical documentation of a life threating food allergy, not food intolerances, and a medical document stating appropriate substitutions for the allergy.
We serve cow’s milk, if your child requires/prefers a substitution a weekly portion may be brought in a labeled container. Almond milk cannot be served in the center. Children under two receive whole milk and children two and older receive one percent.
